Renfrewshire Cup Final: Report
John Coughlin and Arthur Bell took charge of a strong Saints side for this evenings Renfrewshire Cup Final against top amateur side Viewfield Rovers. Towards the end however a frustrated Tom Hendrie gave up his seat in the stand and made more than one trip to the dugout as Saints made heavy weather of retaining the Renfrewshire Cup. The less than impressive performance also resulted in a 20 minute blockade on the dressing room as Hendrie made his thoughts known to the players.

It was a game dominated by Saints however the constant schoolboy errors were always to the fore and the old problem of poor finishing continued to the end.

The game started promisingly when after 5 minutes Gillies played the ball wide right for Barry McLaughlin to pursue. McLaughlin was fouled before he could get the cross in. Lappin took the free kick and flighted a great ball to the far post where rising starlet David Lowing converted from close range.

Five minutes later, Viewfield drew level after a good run and shot from Rae went narrowly past the post. Saints trialist keeper then made a poor clearance from the resulting goal kick and the ball fell to McGuire 30 yards out. McGuire didn't think twice and unleashed a cracking shot which flew into the top left corner of the net.

A minute later McGarry had the chance to restore the lead when he was sent clear through on the keeper but the keeper made the block with his legs.

On 17 minutes there was nearly a disaster from the trialist keeper when he almost got caught in possession but crashed his clearance off the Viewfield forward and the ball almost crossed the goal line, the situation being retrieved by the keeper.

A good run and cross from Chris Kerr nearly put Saints in front on 19 minutes however Rudden couldn't convert when it looked easier to find the net.

The pattern continued however on the half hour mark Viewfield put the Saints defence under a bit of sustained pressure forcing some rash defending and a goalmouth scramble but fortunately for Saints the danger passed.

Half Time 1 - 1

The second half was 3 minutes old when Turner made a hash of a header to McLaughlin allowing McGuire one on one with the keeper however he sent his shot wide of the left hand post. Murray then went off injured to be replaced by Colin Drew.

Five minutes later a great peice of skill by Lappin allowed him to send over a great cross to the head of Barry McLaughlin but the header came crashing off the bar and cleared to safety.

Another five minutes later it was McGarry's turn to be sinner when he headed over from yet another Lappin centre.

It was at this point Hendrie made a visit to the dugout and the substitution was made - Baltacha replacing Gillies who looked out of sorts. The substitution appeared to have the desired effect as two minutes later McKenzie almost scored when he got the break of the ball in the box but the shot came crashing off the underside of the bar and was cleared.

On 64 minutes another fine cross by Lappin was met by the head of McGarry however Viewfield keeper McMaster made the save.

Baltacha made his presence felt on 67 minutes when a fine dribble resulted in him being fouled on the edge of the box. Baltacha elected to take the free kick however the keeper parried the shot and in the resulting scramble both McLaughlin and Lappin failed to convert.

The breakthrough came on 74 minutes when Turner played the ball to McGarry at the edge of the area. McGarry cleverly squared the ball to Baltacha who found the corner of the net with a left foot shot.

On 82 minutes the combination of Lappin & McGarry set Baltacha up for a shot at goal but the attentions of the defender resulted in the ball going over the bar and Baltacha limping off injured and he was replaced by Ryan Robinson.

McGarry almost sealed the win two minutes from time after Kerr made the by-line and sent over a cross. McGarry's header looked a certain goal however McMaster pulled off a superb save to keep the scoreline hugely respectable for Rovers.

Full Time 2 - 1.

Star Saint: Simon Lappin. Next season Saints strikers will need the ammunition and this lad can certainly provide. His crosses and general play were of the highest quality.

St Mirren: Trialist, Rudden, Kerr, Turner, McLaughlin, Lowing, Murray (Drew), McKenzie, McGarry, Gillies (Baltacha) (Robinson), Lappin. Subs Not Used: Guy, Hillcoat.

Viewfield Rovers: McMaster, Leonard, Fitzsimmons, Moodie, Cleary, Martin, McCulloch, McIntyre (Cowie), Evans, Rae (Scanlon), McGuire. Subs Not Used: P. McArdle, J. McArdle
