Under-20 Side Win Cup

Yesterday afternoon the first team won the Renfrewshire Cup and not to be outdone, this afternoon the Under-20 side won the final of the Kilbirnie Ladeside Pre-Season Tournament to complete a good weekend of lifting silverware for the Club.

The young Saints won 2-1 against Rutherglen Glencairn this afternoon at Kilbirnie Ladeside’s home ground, Valefield.  Both of Saints goals were scored by a trialist who notched one in each half.

When the awards were being handed out at the end of the day things were capped off nicely when John McGinn and Jack Smith jointly won the player of the tournament award.

St Mirren starting XI: Whyte, Meechan, Kelly, McGinn, Holt, Williams, Hughes, Cuddihay, Smith, Murray, McMillan.
Subs: Brady, McLear, Baird, Yaqub, McEwan, Duggan, Mallan, Coyle.

David Longwell, St Mirren’s Head of Youth Development, said, “It was a hard game today but it was also great experience for the boys.

“There was lots of good stuff in our play but that being said we also know that there is lots to work on before the start of the new season.

“We had a lot of Under-17 boys playing in the game – six in total – so this was a very young group.

“Lot of positives and well done to John McGinn and Jack Smith who both shared the player of the tournament award.  It was a big positive for them and they both deserved it.

“Over the weekend the boys showed great attitude and spirit and we’ll look to carry that forward into the new season”
