Manager’s Update – 20/05/2014

Tommy Craig is now well into his new job as team manager and we caught up with him today to see how things are shaping up for the new season ahead.

The first line of business was the release of players and contract talks.

Tommy said, “David van Zanten is not to be offered a new contract and Eric Djemba-Djemba, Conor Newton, Josh Magennis and Adam Campbell won’t be back at the club next season.

“Over the next couple of days I’ll be continuing to talk to the other players who will be out of contract. I know people will be asking about Kenny McLean and as things stand the dialogue continues with him.”

At the end of last week it was confirmed that striker Steven Thompson was put in place as club captain. Tommy explained why he thought Steven was the right man for the job.

He said, “I had brought in Jim Goodwin and Gary Teale as player/coaches as they will assist me both on and off the park and I believe that they still have the legs to play, and I can see them heading down the coaching route.

“Stevie Thompson is a different case all together. He is so valuable at doing what he does best, and that’s putting the ball into the back of the net.

“In terms of coaching Stevie isn’t ready to go into it yet. His biggest asset to St Mirren is his scoring prowess and I’m looking to see him being the same 20 goal a season striker that he has been for the club thus far, and I hope that continues.

“I also know he will need the rest that goes along with it. He is a guy who puts everything into the game, leads by example and is very good around the dressing room. With us being a club who like to develop our own players, Stevie will be a big influence on the boys coming through the academy.

“There are many facets to Stevie as a captain but the biggest thing of all is as long as he is putting the ball into the back of the net he will always have a place at St Mirren.”

The first game of the pre-season has been confirmed as against Albion Rovers on 15th July but as yet nothing else has been confirmed for the pre-season other than the players return date.

Tommy said, “We’re in the process of trying to put a programme into place for the pre-season, the players will return for pre-season on Wednesday 2nd July.”
