Loan Signing: Tom Walsh

St Mirren have signed Rangers midfielder Tom Walsh on a loan deal until January 2017.

A product of the Ibrox side’s youth system, Tom made his first team debut for Rangers aged 16 in a Third Division match against Stirling Albion in December 2012.

Tom spent the first half of season 2014/15 out on loan to Stenhousemuir where he made 10 appearances for the Warriors before returning to Glasgow and making 10 outings for Rangers.

Last season Tom went out on loan to Championship side Dumbarton where he made 16 appearances for The Sons.

Tom has also been capped for Scotland at under-16, 17 and 19 levels.

The midfielder said on signing on loan for Saints, “I’m delighted to be here. Obviously it is a good club, good facilities and a good stadium so I’m looking forward to getting games.

“It is good to have someone like the gaffer [Alex Rae], who has obviously played at a great level, to want me to come here and it is a great move for me to get games under my belt and try to establish myself in the team.

“I just want to enjoy my football and play games, obviously not going to get the opportunity at Rangers, so it was a no-brainer to come here.”

Tom will be available for selection in tomorrow’s Betfred Cup tie against Ayr United and is looking forward to getting started and settling in at St Mirren.

He said, “Yes, it will be a tough game as they [Ayr] are in the Championship now. Never going to be easy but I’m looking forward to it and hopefully we get off to a good start.

“I know a few of them [St Mirren players] from Rangers, they are all good guys and made me feel welcome so it is easy to blend in.”

Tom knows the season ahead will be a tough one but he believes the aims are clear: “I like to get forward, create things and hopefully I can add some goals to my game, that’s what I need to improve on so hopefully I can do that here. Just to create things and excite people that is what I try and do.

“It’ll be tough [this season] but this is a good club who should be in the Premiership so I think we have got to look high and try and get ourselves up the table as quick as we can for as long as we can. There is no reason why not, there is a good squad here so we are more than capable of doing it.

“The aim is obviously promotion, that is the ultimate aim, everyone knows that but we’ll take it game by game and hopefully we can do it.”
